Orderly Planning Ensures a Successful Wedding

After you decide as a couple to unite in matrimony, what follows during the next few months before the wedding can become something stressful and confusing. It is important to establish your priorities with a to-do list so you won't forget any details. Orderly and organized planning will help you avoid many last-minute setbacks that can turn into unplanned expenses. Here are some general traditional guidelines to help you prepare your to-do list within the timeframe recommended by the experts. Each wedding is unique, so feel free to adjust and change this list, adding any items or details that you consider necessary for the event.


Six months to a year in advance
  • Select the date and time for the ceremony and reception.
  • Decide the kind of wedding you wish to have and how much you can spend.
  • Reserve the venues for the ceremony and reception. Select a minister or notary to officiate at the ceremony.
  • Decide how many guests you’ll invite.
  • Determine the guest list and start to compile names and addresses.
  • Select a photographer, florist, bakery, videographer, catering service, DJ or band, and wedding consultant (if you decide to hire one).
  • Announce your engagement.
  • Plan your honeymoon.
  • Make sure your passports are up-to-date if you plan on traveling abroad.
  • Select the venue for the rehearsal dinner.
  • Select and order the wedding gown and accessories.
  • Select the members of the wedding party: flower girl, bridesmaids, groomsmen, ring bearers, etc.
  • Select the dresses and tuxes for the bridesmaids and ring bearers.
  • Look for invitations and accessories.
  • Schedule appointments at the beauty salon (hairdo, manicure, pedicure, etc.).
  • Reserve the transportation service.
  • Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests.
  • Select the wedding rings.

Four months in advance

  • Finish the guest list.
  • Order the invitations.
  • Make the maps for the invitations.
  • Reserve the items to be rented, such as silverware and tablecloths.
  • Start planning the bachelor and bachelorette parties.
  • Finish planning the honeymoon.
  • Register for gifts.
     

Two months in advance

  • Send out the invitations five weeks before the wedding.
  • Finish planning the ceremony.
  • Solidify your plans with the photographer, videographer, baker, florist, DJ or band, and catering service.
  • Finish choosing the music for the ceremony and reception.
  • Start planning the hourly schedule for the wedding day.
     

One month in advance

  • Request the marriage license and/or any other legal requirements.
  • Buy gifts for the members of the wedding party.
  • Start a list of gifts you’ve already received.
  • Make final adjustments to the wardrobe of the bride and the wedding party.
  • Contact the photographer to get the formal wedding portrait.
  • Buy a wedding gift for your soon-to-be spouse.
     

Two weeks in advance

  • Confirm lodging for out-of-town guests.
  • Confirm all the honeymoon reservations.
  • Make the programs.
     

One week in advance

  • Make sure members of the wedding party have picked up their dresses and tuxes.
  • Attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Distribute gifts to members of the wedding party.
  • Make sure you have the marriage license and the rings.
  • Contact the guests who have not yet confirmed.
  • Give the final headcount to the venue and caterer. Finish the guest seating charts.
  • Pay the service providers.
     

The day of the wedding

  • Eat something in the morning.
  • Enjoy your great day.
